{{ 'About' | translate }} Growing Great Places

We want everyone to be able to take part in making the places where they live, work and play better. Our towns, villages and communities are the strength of Kirklees. Local people have asked us to do more to recognise this. So we’re celebrating our places by encouraging more great ideas.

We can support organisations who are either an Unincorporated Association, Charitable Trust, Charitable Incorporated Company, Community Interest Company, Community Benefit Society or Cooperative Society, with pledges of up to £5,000, up to 50% of your campaign target. Individuals and non-constituted community groups can apply for up to a £2,500 pledge to support their campaign.

Town or Parish councils and private or public companies are not eligible.

You might have a little idea that can have a big impact by bringing a place together. Or you might need some help growing support for an ambitious project that’s just getting started. We want you to feel able to influence your community’s future. Please get involved and help the movement to grow - pitch your ideas, back any projects you like and let other people know. Growing Great Places is all about bringing people and places together. It’s part of our work to grow a stronger local democracy here in Kirklees, from the ground up. If you have any questions please contact: GrowingGreatPlaces@kirklees.gov.uk

Hemplow Bowling Club renovation
Hemplow Bowling Club renovation joined Growing Great Places1 day ago

Situated on the edge of Marsden Moor National Park with fabulous views of the Pennine hills and the village of Marsden, Hemplow Bowling Club (HBC) is a well established, independent sports club and community hub. Our aim is to provide a friendly, social space for those wishing to play, and learn to play crown green bowls. Having celebrated it's centenary in 2021 the club now needs to renovate, revitalise and grow to ensure its continuation. Renovation of the club house, pavilion and outdoor shelters form key aspects of the rejuvenation of the club which along with the renewal and upkeep of the bowling green underpin our aspirations to remain one of the best crown green surfaces in the Huddersfield area and maintain the tradition of hosting county matches and junior finals. All monies raised will be used to fund renovations.

Aspire Journeys, where 200 older community members from Aspire connect with 100 primary-aged children across seven Huddersfield schools. Unfolding across seven Huddersfield schools, Aspire Journeys transforms spaces into hubs of creativity, creating lasting connections. It's an exploration of cross-generational creativity, uniting older adults' wisdom with young minds' curiosity. This initiative, embracing various storytelling forms, pays homage to Huddersfield's heritage. Beyond sessions, it's a celebration of unique tales shaping our identity, fostering connections and understanding through shared heritage. It's a celebration of stories shaping our identity - a bridge between generations, a cultural heritage celebration, and a legacy weaving through time. For everyone touched by storytelling - older adults sharing chapters, primary-aged children ready for a journey, schools seeking narrative richness, and a community connecting through shared stories.
